New research has found that more than three-quarters (77%) of organisations have observed ‘presenteeism’ – people continuing to work while unwell – in remote staff during the pandemic year. The latest CIPD and Simplyhealth Health and Wellbeing at Work report found that this is slightly higher levels of presenteeism than when workers were going into a central workplace (75%). Aside from ‘presenteeism’, the study also shed light on the prevalence of ‘leaveism’. This refers to working outside of contracted hours or using annual leave to work when ill. Although more employers are striving to address these issues compared to the last year, more than two-fifths experiencing ‘presenteeism’ (43%) and ‘leaveism’ (47%) aren’t actively taking action.
